The ALF Appliance

What is the ALF Appliance & Why is it Used so Frequently?

The ALF appliance was designed by Dr. Darick Nordstrom and stands for "Advanced Lightwire Functional". It is advanced because of the multitude of design possibilities. It is made of extremely light wire that provides exceptional force and support. A functional appliance is one used to work in conjunction with the natural function of the jaws and muscles.

The ALF is a set of wires soldered together which fits on the inside of the teeth. It may be made for the upper or lower arch. It has many benefits over traditional appliances, both from the dentist / orthodontist practitioner's stand-point and that of the patient.

With the light wires used and carefully formed to the arch, the ALF provides for minimal encroachment of tongue space. For the patient, this means an appliance that is easier to adapt to for both eating and speech. For the practitioner, it means removing the concern of interfering with airway space. Additionally, its light weight and smooth design provide for a minimal amount of discomfort while the mouth adapts.

Probably the most noted characteristic by our patients is the fact that most are designed in a way that it is hardly even noticeable while in place. In most cases, an ALF cannot be seen, even when smiling. For the practitioner, the tooth movement possible with an ALF appliance is extremely efficient.
