Coordinating care within the dental profession has long been common practice. The dentist, oral surgeon, periodontist, endodontist, etc., (all dental specialties), coordinate and communicate routinely about the common treatment area / issue. When we consider, though, that the body functions as a whole, it becomes apparent that we need to coordinate and communicate with practitioners outside of the dental profession as well.
The health needs of the body have always outreached the scope of any single practitioner. The "entourage" idea has recently become popular but too often is only a series of providers functioning independently who don't communicate about the patient they are all treating.
The basis of multi-disciplinary co-treatment is having practitioners communicate and combine talents for the ultimate benefit of the patient. Whether they provide treatment in tandem (in the same place / time) or separately, the key is that they all share a common vision of health and provide care based on treating the cause, not the effect.
